There are currently more than 3.8 million nurses in the United States alone. This may sound like a lot, but despite this number, there is a very serious nurse staffing shortage going on. Many people think that this shortage will simply solve itself on its own over a few months or years, but this may not be the case.

But what is causing this nurse shortage? What can be done about it and why is the problem so persistent? Keep reading and learn more about this problem and what can be done about it.

More Nurses Are Retiring

While there are several million nurses currently active and working in hospitals, many of those nurses are getting older and starting to retire. This is a big problem that many people didn’t account for. Because there are so many nurses that are nearing the age of retirement, many nurses are retiring all at once.

This is one of several reasons why people are starting to notice that there is a serious nursing shortage that is currently affecting the entire country. Some nurses might even consider retiring early. This is because ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, nursing as a job has become much more difficult and more intensive.

This is especially true for older nurses who often have a hard time keeping up with their younger colleagues. Whatever the case, such large groups of American nurses starting to retire is beginning to cause a shortage of hundreds of thousands of nurses. This, of course, is not ideal for the healthcare industry.

If there are not enough available nurses, the workload will be much heavier on the nurses that are currently working in hospitals. The workload will also be greater for doctors. More than that, patients in hospitals may not get the treatment they need or they may not get the necessary treatment in time.

For that reason, a good staffing company is essential. Such a company will make it easier for new nurses to enter the workforce so that the staffing shortage might not hit so hard.

There Are Not Enough New Nurses

Many people think that even though many nurses are starting to retire, they’ll just be replaced with new nurses and the staffing shortage will be fixed in no time. However, fixing the national nursing shortage is not so simple. Besides many nurses starting to retire, the other problem fueling the shortage has to do with the fact that there are not many new nurses available.

In fact, ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, the nursing field has only experienced a growth of 1% in 2020.

As you can imagine, this small growth will not help the shortage very much. But again, a good staffing company can use available nurses and put them into the system to help the problem.

All About the Nurse Staffing Shortage
